Synopsis

Sean and Leila talk to Berg in the cornfield.

In the cornfield, Sean continues to go through Berg's belongings while Leila ponders aloud how they were found and why they were after her. Sean replies that Agent Collier's line could have been tapped. He notes that the man has no wallet or id, only a syringe and a card with a triangle on it. Leila says that Abby mentioned a triangle being on the vials of medicine used on her and the other girls, and then Berg begins to wake up. Sean then threatens to shoot Berg in the head unless he tells them what is going on, but Berg says that Sean is bluffing--that Sean would not shoot him in cold blood. Sean responds that the man is right, and asks Leila for the syringe. When Berg continues to say nothing, Sean injects him with the needle. Berg then gets up, asking what Sean has done, and takes off running through the cornfield. Sean and Leila chase after him, and catch up to Berg, who is collapsed face down on the ground and hyperventilating. Sean then tells him to get up; and Berg turns to face them, revealing that his face has aged.

Mrs. Jarvis greets President Martinez in the hospital.

In the hospital, Director Sterling and Secret Service agents accompany President Martinez as he walks with them through a corridor towards Vice President Jarvis's room. Director Sterling says that the Vice President is doing better and that the Vice President's doctor says he should be able to answer their questions. President Martinez says that once Vice President Jarvis reveals who it is that he was working with, to devote every resource to finding the person and making him pay. After President Martinez and Director Sterling head inside the room, Director Sterling asks the Vice President's wife, Erika, to give them a moment alone with him. Mrs. Jarvis agrees and leaves, saying she will wait outside. Once she is gone, President Martinez asks for the name Vice President Jarvis was going to give them before the explosion, but the Vice President claims he does not know who they are talking about and notes the doctors said he might have suffered some memory loss in the trauma. President Martinez responds that he does not know how they got to him, but he will make the Vice President pay for it for the rest of his life if he does not tell him. Vice President Jarvis counters by asking what the public will do if they found out he knew about the Mount Inostranka detainees and went along with the cover-up, and then saying that the President would be eviscerated by the press and members of his own Congress. Vice President Jarvis then continues that President Martinez is just a small player in this, like he is, subject to manipulation by others with the resources and know-how to take him down; but he intends to remain the Vice President. President Martinez responds that it is not over and leaves the room.

As President Martinez talks alone with Director Sterling in a nearby room, Erika rejoins her husband. President Martinez tells the Director that they should have expected the standoff threat of exposing each other's secrets, and Director Sterling replies that President Martinez should know the secrets he is keeping are for the good of the country. Then, Director Sterling takes a call on his cell phone and tells President Martinez there is a National Security emergency, Code Red, and they need to get back to the White House right away.

Later, a General briefs President Martinez and his staff in the Situation Room of the White House. Showing a satellite photo on the main screen, he says they are looking at what they think is a just-discovered Soviet-era Khrushchev-Saka missile installation on the southern tip of Amala, and they have no way of knowing what kind of warhead it is carrying. President Martinez asks why they did not know about it, and Director Sterling answers that the NSA believes countermeasures were used to defeat satellite surveillance. The President then says that if the missile can reach them, he wants the installation to be shut down until the Amalan government tells them what is on the missile and where it is going. The General answers that the Amalan government claims no knowledge of the installation, which is built on relatively ungoverned tribal land. Director Sterling then notes that the Amalan government does not have the resources for such an installation, so he thinks a non-state party must be involved but none of the terrorist groups they track is remotely capable of something like this.

Elsewhere, Thomas, Simon, Isabel, and Sophia are sitting together in an apartment. Thomas lights a candle and covers it with a coffee mug. Isabel then fills the mug from a tea pot, and Thomas takes a sip from the mug and passes it to Sophia, who also drinks from it. Sophia thanks Thomas for doing her this honor, and he responds that the honor is theirs. She then comments that they can and will make it through these difficult times together, and Simon and Thomas nod to her. Sophia continues by asking about their progress in getting them home. Thomas answers that the interface used for the plane was merely an improvisation, and they will need to build a new one at the same site to take advantage of the infrastructure set up there. Sophia agrees that doing so will save them time and money, and notes that she went over the financial records he gave her. Sophia continues that she wants to be sure she has all the accounts, and Isabel confirms to Thomas that Sophia should have everything. After sharing said thanks, Thomas says he will take Isabel back to her hotel.

After Simon closes the door behind Thomas and Isabel, Sophia tells Simon she knows they are lying--that Thomas has a separate set of funds not overseen by members of their community kept hidden from everyone with Isabel's help. She tells Simon that Thomas would just deny everything, so they need to track the money instead of confronting him. Sophia continues that their accounts are being managed by a banker in Winchester, Steven Grant. Simon responds that he will go to talk with him right away, and Sophia tells him they need to find out where the money came from and what it is being used for.

Meanwhile, Isabel, who now walks with a cane, is accompanied by Thomas as they leave the apartment and proceed towards the parking garage. She tells Thomas about it being difficult to be with Sophia and smile; and Thomas responds that he thinks Sophia knows about the hidden accounts. He explains that his mother always does things for a reason, and that is why she asked about the financial records. As they reach the car, Thomas says they have to go now, before Sophia finds out their plan. Isabel says it is too soon--that they don't have everything they need. Thomas responds that they will figure it out, but he needs to know that Isabel is ready for this--that she realizes how many people will die when they are done.

Mr. Stern warns Leila to not follow Berg's instruction.

In the cornfield, Leila says it can't be, seeing the aged Berg. Berg asks for their help, and Sean asks where Leila's sister is. Berg answers the she is in Willow Brook Behavioral Hospital, but they need to get him there. Just then, Mr. Stern catches up to them in the cornfield and to not do whatever Berg is asking them to do. Leila asks to speak to Abby, but Mr. Stern tells them he is leaving with his wife and daughter before the police arrive, and they should too if they want any chance of a normal life. He continues that some things are better left unknown, and then rushes away. Leila takes a few steps after him to get more information, but stops when Sean calls out to her that they are on their own and Berg is dead.

In his home office, James Dempsey gets a call from the woman who was with Samantha. She tells him Mr. Berg has not shown up with the new subject, and James replies that they have to assume he has been compromised if he does not show up within the hour--that they will have to follow protocol. She says she will need some assistance, and James replies that she will have it. The woman then reaches Samantha's cell; and, looking through the door window, answers that their newest subject is doing better than he expected. Inside the cell, Samantha is writing something on a wall with chalk.

Later, Leila finishes driving herself and Sean to Willow Brook Behavioral Hospital, and parks their car across the street. She notes that this must be a psych hospital, and be the place Abby mentioned to her. Sean wonders how they would keep a bunch of kidnapped girls in this working facility, but Leila says she is sure. As they head across the street, Sean says they should be able to just walk right in. Once inside, they head to the reception desk and a nurse says she will be with them in a minute. So while they wait, Leila peeks a clipboard on the wall with some names of patients. When the nurse returns, she claims they are there to see her aunt, Carolyn Jones, and the nurse takes her inside to visit her. The nurse warns them that Carolyn took her medication half an hour ago, so she could be a bit groggy but that should keep her from biting. Upon reaching Carolyn, Leila and Sean claim to Carolyn that she is Carolyn's niece. Sean says he is her husband, Tom, and that they are stopping by cause they just got married. Carolyn replies that Leila must be David's daughter, Sarah, and they agree with her. The nurse then says they have 30 minutes until dinner, and leaves them alone with her. Sean then whispers to Leila he is going to see what doors the keycard unlocks, and Leila tells him to hurry as she does not know how long she can keep up their ruse.

Security escorts Sean and Leila from Willow Brook.

When Sean leaves, he tries to unlock a door with the keycard, but it does not unlock. Meanwhile, Leila tells Carolyn her father is well, and Carolyn responds that she is confused--that she thought his cancer was terminal. Leila clarifies that she only meant he was holding up well, and Carolyn comments that his "cancer in the balls" must be painful. Back in the hallway, Sean tries another door with the keycard, but it does not unlock. A security guard then spots Sean, asking what he thinks he is doing. Sean tells the guard he thinks he is lost. In the patient ward with Carolyn, Leila asks Carolyn if she has seen any children around there. Carolyn replies that Sally Ann Grasperson has three granddaughters, who come every other weekend and sometimes bring their dog, a Shih Tzu. Leila clarifies that she meant if there were any children living there as patients. However, before Leila can get an answer, the security guard arrives with Sean and calls to Leila to come with her. As he escorts them both to the door, he warns them that he does not know or care why they are there, and will have them arrested if they come back there again.

As Sean and Leila reach outside, a male patient, Moses, who was in the ward, calls to them from the second floor balcony. He tells them that the children are in the floor, and he can hear them at night. The security guard then approaches Sean and Leila, and shouts up to Moses to go back to his room. When Moses does not do so, and insists there are girls in the floor; he is escorted away. Sean then tells Leila that the man was clearly confused, but Leila spots the water tower on the roof of the hospital that Abby mentioned to her and tells Sean about it.

Simon finds a photo of Steven with Thomas and four others.

In Winchester, Virginia, Simon searches the home of Steven Grant, and finds the man dead in the bathtub. He calls Sophia and tells her that Steven was murdered, and that there are no signs of forced entry so he knew his attacker. Simon continues that there is no proof Thomas did this, but does not think it is a coincidence. Sophia then says that Thomas never returned from taking Isabel back to her hotel, that neither of them are answering their cell phones, and that Thomas took the key module. Sophia answers that Thomas may have taken it to stop them from going home, but Simon says there are other possibilities. Simon then notes that they destroyed Steven's computer, but he will see what the techs at Langley can recover from it. Simon then gets a message and tells Sophia he has been called back to D.C. Sophia notes that she put the word out to everyone in the community to contact her if Thomas reaches out to them, and they disconnect. Simon then finds a photo of six people, including Steven holding a plaque with another man, and Thomas standing next to them.

Elsewhere, Thomas is in an unknown room with Isabel and he calls the man who was holding the plaque with Steven in the photo. Thomas, who is sitting in front of three laptops, asks the man for a progress update. The man, who is driving towards the missile installation, answers that the modifications are almost complete. Thomas then asks him to get it in the air as soon as possible, and they disconnect. Isabel then tells Thomas that they have done it, now, and everything is going to change.

In the White House Situation Room, the General is talking with President Martinez and Director Sterling. He says that it looks like the missile could be launched within 2 hours, and is not sure, without permission to fly over Chinese airspace, that their fighter jets will arrive in time. He continues that they are trying every diplomatic channel. The President's assistant, Rachel, then notifies President Martinez that Ambassador Talaky of Amala has arrived. President Martinez tells the General to keep trying with the Chinese, and to make sure the State Department is doing everything they can. He tells Blake to accompany him and they leave the room.

Later, Ambassador Talaky enters the Oval Office, where President Martinez is waiting with Director Sterling. He explains he would have gotten there earlier, but he was gathering as much information for them as he could on the installation. President Martinez responds that he should know the installation is less than 2 hours from launching the missile, and the Ambassador says he was unaware of that. President Martinez then says that is unacceptable. Ambassador Talaky responds that the tribal leaders have not cooperated with them, but they are mobilizing their forces toward the missile silo though he is unsure whether they will arrive in time. He continues that he has found out that the installation is supposedly built by a private company that exists in name only, and hands Director Sterling a file with records about the company. President Martinez responds that the missile may be capable of reaching the United States with a nuclear arsenal, and if that happens, the United States will retaliate. He explains that there is already a squadron of F-16s on route to his country, which he would direct to attack Amala's capital if the missile makes landfall in the United States. Director Sterling then interrupts that he would like to talk with the President in private, and President Martinez sends the ambassador to tell Amala's president what he told him.

When the ambassador has left, Director Sterling shows President Martinez the incorporation documents for the company Ambassador Talaky mentioned and points him to the names of the board of directors. He notes that the board is unusually large, and that there are 97 names--the names of the original 97 Inostranka detainees. Director Sterling continues that this means the missile installation is controlled by the sleepers, and that Sophia and her people are taunting them by listing the names. President Martinez responds that he thinks this is Thomas's doing.

Later, Sean and Leila sneak back in to Willow Brook hospital at night through a door a janitor leaves open when he takes out the garbage. They head into a stairwell on the first floor, looking for a way down, but only see stairs leading up several stories. A security guard whistles as he making rounds on an upper level of the stairwell, so Sean and Leila hear him and leave the stairwell through the same door they entered. They then sneak into the lobby, and crawl past the reception desk. As another security guard approaches, they back up against the elevator doors and enter inside just before he walks by. Inside, Leila notes that there is no basement level button. However, Sean notices the elevator has a card reader like the hallway doors, and successfully uses Berg's keycard to activate it. The elevator then proceeds down and they exit into a dimly lit hallway. They reach a couple metal gates that Sean opens with Berg's keycard and they continue. Sean gets Leila to confirm she also smells something burning. They reach a lit lab that was recently cleared out, and whose door is open. Sean briefly checks it out, then follows Leila to see the other rooms. Leila then reaches the main room where the girls were kept, with the bookshelf and the colored drawings, still laying around. She calls out for Samantha and rushes out and searches several more vacated labs with Sean. Leila then finds a room with her first name written in chalk in capital letters on the wall, and tells Sean that Samantha was there.

Elsewhere, Simon tells Sophia over the phone that he is still working on the banker's hard drive, but he knows what Thomas has been doing with the money--a missile installation in Amala. He continues that a missile is currently being prepared for launch, and that Thomas went out of his way to ensure President Martinez knew who was behind it. Simon answers Sophia that they are trying to stop the launch, and asks her if Thomas would launch an attack on this country or any other. Sophia responds that she honestly does not know what he is capable of now.

In the Situation Room, Director Sterling notices some movement in the installation surveillance, and zooming in comments that they are pulling the supports away to prepare for launch. The General then answers President Martinez that the fighters are still 20 minutes away, and there is no word yet from the Amalan ground forces. Director Sterling comments that the entire Western seaboard could be vulnerable if the missile launches, and President Martinez asks if he is telling him they are powerless to stop the launch.

Meanwhile, Thomas talks with the launch crew at the missile installation and gives them the go to launch the missile. They count down from nine seconds, and then the missile blasts off from underground. Then, in the Situation Room, Director Sterling then asks for the missile's trajectory. An assistant then calculates that the missile appears to be entering a gravity-turning trajectory. Director Sterling then answers President Martinez that means that they are not the missile's target, and notes that the lack of detected radiation means the missile is not carrying a nuclear payload.

The satellite is activated.

Reaching space, the missile's 2nd stage is released along with the shell of the first stage to reveal a satellite. An aid in the Situation Room notes picking up a data burst of some kind from it, and surmises that it is a communications satellite. He continues that a shift in the signal spectrum indicates that signal is being broadcast away from Earth, not towards it. Director Sterling then comments that they are sending a message home. The missile controllers then tell Thomas by phone that the satellite is operational, and he replies to send it. In the Situation Room, the computers have tapped into the signal and hear a loud, high frequency audio noise that causes even Simon to wince a little.

Back at Willow Brook, Sean and Leila locate a large file room. Seeing that the files had been removed from the shelves and set on fire in a big pile on the file, Sean notes that they clearly did not want anyone discovering them but they should see if they could find anything. Leila wonders aloud if Samantha might be dead, but Sean assures her they are still close to finding her. Searching through the burnt files, he finds an intact file for Paul Stern. The file contains some photos of Paul, one of him and Abby getting ice cream on May 4, 2010, another of him alone in April 10, 1983, another of him on a bridge on August 2, 1962, and a black and white photo of him next to a car on December 20, 1947. Leila wonders how it is possible that he looks the same in the photos. Sean responds that he might not be human, and that might be what he is hiding. Leila says she does not want to think about, and does not want to leave until they know where they took her. Pouring through more of the burnt files, Sean finds a partially burnt file folder with inforomation on Michael Buchanan, Leila's father. Inside, the find photo of him and Samantha at the Hollywood Walk of Fame from December 10, 2009, another of him getting of a plane on July 15, 1984, a black and white of him and four friends on the 8th of January or February 1978, a black and white of him and another woman on a small boat on August 6, 1959, and a black and white of him and another man on April 3, 1948. She notices that Michael looks the same in all the photos, and asks what that means.
