Synopsis

Aaron is waiting in an alley a block or two from the site of the destroyed building, when Thomas kicks open a vent on the side of a building nearby. He calls out to Aaron and gets out with Sophia. As they head to Aaron's car, parked in the alley, Sophia tells off Thomas for the people he just killed and tells him that what he did will make them want to hunt them down even more. Aaron tells Sophia it is good to see her, and Sophia replies that it is good to see her too. Aaron notes they should rush as reinforcements are being brought in, and asks what happened to Simon. Sophia says they don't know if he made it out alive, and asks Aaron to find out what has happened to him. They then get in the car, with Aaron driving.

In the White House Situation Room, Director Sterling answers President Martinez that they estimate between 15 to 30 men were still in the building when it collapsed. President Martinez questions the Director how the sleepers appeared to be ahead of them every step of the way, leading to the disaster. Director Sterling answers that there is an informant in their ranks, and that his aid, Justin Murphy, brought it to his attention less than an hour ago, and did not want to bring it up until they discovered whom the informant was. He continues that Justin narrowed it down to someone on the field team, and went into the field to root out the person but they lost contact with him. The Director continues that he was last seen with Agent Lee, so they will hopefully find Justin once Agent Lee recovers from wounds he received in the collapse. President Martinez responds that hopefully is not good enough, and that he needs to do better as they are thinking the informant was someone the Director selected for the job. The President continues that Director Sterling needs to find out soon, or he will find someone else who can.

Laura and Blake enjoy some wine at home.

Fourteen years earlier, Blake Sterling is preparing a meal at home in Langley, Virginia, with his wife. She mentions telling her seventh grade class they might have a surprise quiz on Gettysburg today, and Blake responds that she is too easy on them. She replies that she apparently was not, as half the class still failed. Blake finishes opening a bottle of wine and begins to serve a couple of glasses of it. His wife jokes that it is like their consciousness is being projected somewhere else. Blake responds that he would hang on her every word if she was his teacher, but she wouldn't want to know him in seventh grade. After she tastes the wine, Blake's wife says it is really good and Blake tells her it is from the winery in Barcelona near where their car broke down. He says he called the owner and asked them to ship a case, as it has been 10 months, 3 weeks, and 2 days and he feels like celebrating. The house phone then rings, and Blake takes the call while she leaves to start cooking some risotto. The call is from Blake's father, who insists he cancel his meeting the following morning to come talk with him.

Back in the present, Director Sterling enters the hospital where Agent Lee is being treated and talks with the doctor treating him. She tells the Director that Agent Lee suffers from dural hematomma and that they were able to reduce his cranial swelling, but that it could be hours before he could be able to talk. Director Sterling says he will wait for as long as it takes and gets a seat near Agent Lee, who is asleep on a hospital bed.

Justin is rescued from the trunk of his car.

Outside the coffee shop, a man is arguing with one of the officers still assigned to keep everyone there when a pounding sound begins to emanate from the trunk of a car across the street. The valet hears the pounding and a man screaming for help in the trunk, and some time later federal officials arrive to pry open the trunk. They help the President's aid, Justin Murphy, to exit the trunk, and tell him that Agent Lee has been taken to the hospital. Justin tells them that Agent Lee is the mole, and he needs to talk with Director Sterling.

In the Buchanans' home, Leila asks Madeline if she expects them to believe what happened to her family is because of aliens. Madeline says the correct term is Extraterrestrial Biological Entities or EBEs, and some top secret government documents in the file say they exist. Sean then tells Leila he is considering what Madeline says, cause the plane her father was piloting went from Miami to Arizona in seconds. He confirms to Madeline that it was Avias 514, and she says that rumor has it the plane disappeared during an assassination. Madeline also notes that there was chatter, since suppressed, that President Martinez was going public about Inostranka, so it makes since that they would use Leila's father since he also had information they didn't want to get out. She continues that the night before Michael disappeared, he told her that there was someone out there that would go to any lengths to stop Martinez for their own mysterious reasons, but not political; and suggests Leila search for them to find her family.

Samantha's kidnappers shoot Valerie Buchanan.

After a brief flash to Leila's mother's murder and her sister's kidnapping, Madeline says she is trying to help and Leila allows her to join Sean in searching the file. She picks out her father's notebook from the file, and says there is new information in it--a list of names and numbers on the last written page. Madeline says most of the people are women, but she does not know who the people are. As for the numbers, Madeline suspects they are printed using some kind of code. Sean says he should be able to crack it using the right kind of hardware and CS-encrypted hardline so he can datamine without other people knowing they are doing it. Madeline says she has a friend that might be able to help.

Vicky's supervisor is alone in his office, when one of his assistants walks in. He tells the assistant that his Lanopsis flowers are genetically engineered to open every month instead of blooming each two years, and the assistant tells him he has a call. The supervisor cuts off part of the plant and says it is for his assistant's wife, a 2 billion dollar bouquet. After the assistant leaves, the supervisor answers the call on his cell phone from the man Agent Collier had captured. The man says he is in FBI custody, Dallas field office, and the lawyer the supervisor's people sent say the room he is in is not sweep and the line is clean. He tells the supervisor that Sean and Leila got away, but is not sure how. He adds that somehow they found out Leila's father was chosen for a reason, and may have gone to the Buchanan's home in Atlanta to dig around, but could have come and gone by now. The supervisor says they will track them down, as they have no choice in order to stop them from coming up with the same discoveries Michael Buchanan did.

Elsewhere, Sophia is with Aaron and Thomas on the upper level of an office building. Sophia comments that they have done well for themselves over the past 66 years, and Thomas replies that their holdings are in good shape as they can predict fluctuations of the economy with their math in order to buy low and sell high. Sophia questions whether they worried about someone noticing their success, but Thomas says a man in the Midwest does all the investing for him and has made a fortune following his advice so the attention goes to him instead. Sophia then slaps Thomas when he says he does not want to talk about what happened at the building, saying he does not get to talk to her that way. She tells him his orders were only to do what was needed to get them home, but he has destroyed all the trust she built. Sophia continues that she decides what is right for them, and he needs to come to terms with that before anyone else gets hurt. Thomas asks if that is a threat, and she replies that it is an order and notes that the rest of the people who are living free will follow her lead. Thomas says he understands and apologizes, saying he meant no disrespect and calling Sophia his mother. Sophia replies that then they can start fresh from here. Aaron then approaches and tells them that he heard from one of their watchers that Simon is alive and alright at the hospital, but is being accused of being the mole.

In the hospital, Justin talks with Director Sterling and the head field agent, Mike, in a hallway. Justin tells Director Sterling he is sure Agent Lee is the mole because Agent Lee hit Justin with the radiation detector kit when he asked him to submit to the test himself. The field agent does not think it could be Simon, and asks for Simon to be scanned now. However, Justin says the test will not work now cause it has been over the seven hours the isotope takes to decay. Blake responds that Simon saved his life and others in the building, and questions why he would do that if he was working for the other side. Justin says that was likely on purpose to convince you he wasn't, and Director Sterling agrees to look into it. The Director asks Justin to bring him Agent Lee's personnel files and the agent to go back to the coffee shop and look for additional evidence of what happened. The field agent protests that he does not want to search for evidence to help crucify his friend, but Director Sterling says he is just asking him to do his job.

Fourteen year ago, Blake Sterling enters the operations division office for the CIA in Langley, Virginia, and walks into his father's office. Blake's father asks him how things are at home, and Blake says things are fine. He asks his father to be direct as he has a busy schedule that day. His father says that it is about Laura, and Blake asks if they are not already past this. Blake's father continues that her real name is Svetlana Agletinova, born 1968 in Moscow, and that she is a Russian Intelligence operative. He hands Blake a file covering their surveillance of her and says they have been trailing her for months, and meets her contact at the Dupont Circle Fountain on Tuesdays. Blake responds that there must be another explanation for this, but his father says there isn't and plays an audio cassette recording. On the phone call recording, Laura says in Russian that she finally has the whole file, now that her husband has fallen asleep. Her contact replies that they can always count on her, and she tells him to check the drop in an hour. Blake's father then stops the cassette player and says that her contact, Bobby, is Sergei Vesne, who works both sides. His father also notes that Laura copied the Oxford file from his computer, among other things, and tells his son he knows what he has to do. Blake's father admits he does not need him for this, but wanted him to get the chance to say goodbye and save his career by bringing her in that night.

In the present, Director Sterling reviews Simon's personnel files. They show Simon receiving a Bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1994, with a minor in Fine Arts. However, his secondary school transcript was unavailable and his next of kin listed as deceased. When Justin walks in, Director Sterling shares with him some unverifiable inconsistencies he found in Agent Lee's background. He notes that Agent Lee's high school and middle school were destroyed by Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and his family is either dead or unreachable. Also, the Director notes that Agent Lee looks as fresh as the day he was hired in the photos, and says there is a chance Agent Lee is one of the sleepers. Director Sterling says they will run a DNA scan on Agent Lee's blood to be sure, and they will know the truth soon enough. If Simon is the mole, Director Sterling says he will subject him to a severe interrogation.

Madeline, Sean, and Leila arrive to the front of the apartment building where Madeline's friend Peter lives. Madeline uses the buzzer for Peter to answer or let them in, but he does not reply. However, Madeline continues to buzz at the door and glances at a camera in the door. Finally, Peter responds and tells Madeline to go away. She replies that she left him a message, and it is important or else she would not be there. Peter asks whom her companions are, and Madeline gives him their names. Sean then asks if he could give them access to an encrypted trunk line, and some decent hardware, but Peter says no and tells Madeline that it is too dangerous. Leila then tells him that he is their only hope, and tells him of her mother's murder, and her father and sister being missing, and he lets them inside.

Once upstairs in Peter's apartment, Peter asks Sean and Leila to empty their pockets in case they are carrying something that can be tracked. Sean replies that everything like that has been taken from them, and says they need help figuring out what the list they obtained means. Peter says he still has sources inside the intelligence community, friends, and that he knows the government has her father but will likely not acknowledge that or let him out. As for Leila's sister, Peter says it is unclear but recommends they write her off and consider her dead. He says he does not know who is responsible, but has seen what they can do and that they should walk away while they still can. However, Sean says they are not giving up and says they only need a few minutes on his system and then they will be gone. Peter then pulls out the chair in front of his laptop for him to use.

Elsewhere, Vicky's supervisor, who is on an IV and eating, calls one of his agents and asks if they found them at the house. The agent, who is driving, replies that they missed them, but a neighbor's depiction of a woman that was with them fit Madeline Jackson's description. A friend of theirs at the NSA ran a voice match on Archive Cellular traffic and found a voicemail transmission from her about an hour ago, saying she and two friends were on their way and needed help. The agent confirms he was able to determine their destination and that they will be their shortly. A group of at least seven armed men are preparing their weapons in the back of the van.

At Peter's apartment building, Sean talks with Leila alone and lets her know the search protocols they built will take a while to run. Leila wonders if it fair to ask him to help her search for her family, but Sean says that Michael and Samantha are his family too. However, he is unsure whether Samantha is still alive.

In Atlanta, Georgia, a man parks a minivan at a gas station and heads toward the store, some keys in his hand. He passes a woman, who drops her purse on the ground. He picks it up and hands it to her with the keys, and continues walking the other direction while she goes to the minivan and enters through the sliding van door, closing it behind her. She prepares a syringe with some fluid from a medicine container, and turns to face Samantha, who is restrained with her mouth taped closed.

Back at the apartment building, Peter brings Leila and Sean a printout, and explains that the people on the list are girls, all missing and all the same age as Samantha. As for the numbers, he says that they are SEC identification numbers for shell corporations based in Los Angeles, but he does not know what they do. Then, the van pulls up and parks outside Peter's apartment building and the armed men Vicky's supervisor talked to get out and prepare to storm the building. Madeline catches sight of them on the monitor and warns the others as the men head up the stairwell to Peter's apartment. Once back in the main room of his apartment, Peter instructs Madeline to grab a couple things, and activates a security system. They then head out a back exit as the men knock down the apartment door. When they are far enough away, Peter uses a wireless remote to activate a bomb in his apartment and it blows up. Sean and Leila are thrust to the ground by the explosion, but Peter and Madeline had cleared the corner and keep going, leaving Sean and Leila alone.

Blake unknowingly shares an elevator with Thomas.

At the hospital, Thomas enters an unoccupied medical lab, dressed as a doctor, and turns on a small lamp. He then switches out a vial of blood, turns off the lamp, and leaves the room. Thomas then enters an elevator to make his way out of the hospital, and Director Sterling sees the elevator and asks him to hold it, not realizing it is Thomas. After getting in the elevator, he tells Thomas that he wants the ground floor and asks him if he has a cigarette. Thomas responds that he has not had one in years, and says he uses dark chocolate instead as it releases a little serotonin kick and eases the craving. Director Sterling says thanks for the tip and leaves the elevator with Thomas, still not realizing who he is.

Fourteen years ago, Blake Sterling arrives back home and enters his bedroom. Laura is awake, reading on the bed, and tells him he knows she cannot fall asleep when he is away. Blake goes to the bed and kisses her hand, and she kisses him on the forehead. He asks if she loves him, and Laura says of course she does. She then asks him what is wrong, and he tells her he knows everything. He says to not lie to him--that he knows who she is, but does not care. Blake continues that he knows that their relationship started as a job to her, but he believes that what they have is real and loves her. He says he bought them two tickets to Buenos Aires, that they can leave tonight and the rest does not matter. Laura then holds her hand temporarily to his face, and he heads over and opens a closet door. As he does so, Laura makes a break for it out of the house. As she gets in her car and starts it, Blake drops the bag he was preparing to pack and heads to watch her leave from the window. Then, Blake's father shoots Laura with a gun with a silencer. Blake sees his father shooting at her and screams out Laura's name. He rushes outside and his father asks him to take the gun, saying that they will say he handled it himself. Blake's father says that this would either be a triumph or the end of his career, and asks him not to throw it all away.

In the present, Director Sterling is smoking a cigarette outside Bethesda General Hospital when he gets a call from Agent Mike Garret. He tells the Director they found the receptacle used to transport the isotope in the trash bin at the Capital Grind coffee shop, and they found two partial prints on it that should be enough to work with. Director Sterling instructs him to personally take the prints to the lab right away and call him as soon as there is an ID. Agent Garret asks the Director if there is any word on Agent Lee's DNA test, and Director Sterling says that takes time so he should get them a match on the prints so they don't have to wait.

Near Peter's apartment building, Sean and Leila rush out of the parking lot and keep running. Leila asks if they will be like Madeline and Peter, looking over their shoulders everywhere they go; and Sean replies that he will do everything he can to untangle the situation so they can get back to living their lives. He then stops her in the street and tells her they will be alright.

In Bethesda hospital, a military guard, Davis, is watching over Simon Lee, who wakes up and turns to see Director Sterling sitting next to him. The Director tells Simon that he took blood from him, and ran a DNA screen to prove Justin's accusation that he was a sleeper. He then congratulates Simon that he is human, but that there is a mole in their midst. The Director says that Agent Garret ran the prints on the isotope receptacle and found a match--that Justin Murphy is the mole. Simon responds by saying Murphy.

Aaron visits the Capitol Grind coffee shop as CSI.

Earlier that day, Justin pulls into the parking lot and leaves his car to enter the hospital. Aaron then sneaks over to his car and takes Justin's fingerprints from the car door handle. He then adds the prints to a receptacle, enters the coffee shop dressed as a CSI police officer, and drops the receptacle in the trash.

In Bethesda, Simon says that is unexpected and Director Sterling offers him an apology. Simon says there is no need, and understands. The Director replies that he could not possibly understand.

In the White House, Justin is talking at an assistant's desk when Agent Garret and a couple other agents arrive. Agent Garret asks Justin to come with him, and says that he is under arrest. When Justin does not move and questions the matter, Agent Garret nods to the other agents who then grab Justin and force him from the office past Director Sterling. The Director remains silent, just watching as Justin is escorted away asking to speak with him.

In the office building, Thomas tells Sophia that Simon will be fine and blame is now being placed elsewhere. Sophia thanks Thomas and asks how far he is in getting everyone home. Simon says he helped the nuclear program along over the years, and got them to the point where they could crudely produce the raw materials needed to open up the portal--the uranium ex-fluorides and cesium isotopes. Sophia says she assumed as much when she saw the portal used to transport Avias 514 and implode the building. Thomas continues, that unfortunately, there are limitations such that they can move an airliner a few thousand miles away but are nowhere near being able to send everyone home. He says they are missing a few key components that they can recreate or, in some cases, recover, with Sophia's help. Thomas says they have nowhere near enough raw materials to get them home, and the only source of the main ingredients is in the processing facilities and the nuclear warheads themselves, which Sophia notes are tightly guarded. Thomas continues that after giving it a lot of thought, he might have a way in.

Samantha is introduced to some other girls.

In the White House, President Martinez listens to a news report on television. The reporter says that the White House has released a statement that the passengers of Avias 514 are recovering well from a substance they were exposed to on board and will be released as soon as doctors confirm their condition is stable. Then, Director Sterling comes in and says they found the leak. President Martinez says he heard that it was Justin Murphy. Director Sterling then says he has honed his intuition over the years, and it has been a long time since he has been so wrong about someone. He apologizes to President Martinez that he failed him, and the President asks if the Director is telling him he is not perfect. When Director Sterling nods, President Martinez says it is a relief and offers him a beer. The Director accepts and sits down on the couch next to him.

Elsewhere, Samantha walks down a hallway with the lady that was preparing to inject her earlier. She asks the lady where her mother is, and that she wants to see her mother and father. However, the woman remains quiet and continues to walk forward with Samantha down the hallway. She unlocks and opens the door to an apartment, and brings Samantha into a room where there are five other girls--two are reading, two are are facing the bookshelf, and one is sitting by a toy baby crib. Samantha approaches them, and the woman tells the girls Samantha's name. The woman calls to the girls again, and when they turn to look at her, Samantha sees that their faces appear to be aged or disfigured.
