Synopsis
Sophia is sitting in the subway train, when a nearby bag on a seat produces a couple ringing beeps. She stands up and heads over to the bag, and pulls out and opens a black box that is beeping again. Inside, she finds a two-way earpiece, and inserts it in her right ear.
Thomas's voice greets Sophia, and she replies, chastising him for risking the lives of the Avias 514 passengers. She then tells Thomas that she thinks she is being tracked in order to locate him. Thomas responds that Simon will give them the details of the government's final operation, and asks Sophia to change her clothes to some provided in the bag, in case hers have been compromised. He then tells Sophia to wait for further instructions.
Back in the White House, President Martinez listens to Director Sterling brief him in the Situation Room. Sterling notes that Sophia is still on the red line, proceeding east towards the Metro station, according the scandium-46 isotope they can track in her blood stream for the next seven hours. President Martinez tells Director Sterling to make sure Sophia survives the operation, and heads to another meeting elsewhere. Simon then asks Director Sterling for permission to supervise the field team in person, and the Director gives it.
Later, Simon is driving towards the surveillance area in his SUV and calls Thomas. He warns Thomas about the radioactive isotope that was given to Sophia in her food to track her, and that it cannot be removed but there may be a way to circumvent it, and Simon acknowledges to proceed.
In 1954, a woman is relaxing on some rocks near the beach in Venice Beach, California. Simon climbs up and joins her, giving her a kiss. He says the water is warm and good, and she should go in. She replies that she likes watching him--that he looks like he is discovering water for the first time, and Simon tells her that there wasn't any where he is from. She notes that he never talks about his past, and Simon says it doesn't matter when he is with her--that he is free of it for the first time in his life. The woman, Violet, and Simon say that they love each other, and kiss and hug. Then, they spot Thomas on the beach watching them.
Back in the present, Simon phones Thomas to instruct Sophia to get off at the Gallery Play station and walk east. Thomas acknowledges and radios Sophia about the change in plans due to the isotope, and she gets off at the Gallery station in Chinatown. In the Situation Room, Director Sterling and the President's staff closely monitor Sophia's movements. Elsewhere, Thomas radios Sophia to head up to the next street and take an immediate left.
Meanwhile, Simon talks with a field agent who lets him know the field team is three blocks away from the station. He tells the agent to hold his position--that the team is not to get any closer. As Sophia continues walking, Thomas tells Sophia to head left on 6th St and continue across the next street to a place he has been describing to her. Before she can do so, she bumps into a man who says something to her in Mandarin Chinese. Sophia replies in Mandarin and heads East across 6th St NW and into the Capitol Grind coffee shop.
Inside the shop, Sophia buys something to drink and heads to a table where Simon meets up with her and pours something into the containers of milk. As more people consume the milk in their coffee, more targets begin appearing on the surveillance screens in the Situation Room. Director Sterling tells Justin to have Simon move his men in to contain them, but Sophia and several others have already left the shop.
At a motel, Sean approaches Leila on a double bed in one of the rooms. Leila says she knew Sean was looking for her, and that kept her going. She asks him to tell her what happened to her father and the rest of her family. Meanwhile, Agent Collier asks the man she captured for his name, but he refuses to tell her. When she then threatens to use his fingerprints to identify him, he wishes her good luck with that and asks for her to get a doctor to stop his bleeding.
At Leila's request, Sean explains to her about the plane's transport from Miami to Arizona, and her father's instructions to him. He breaks the news to her that her mother was murdered and her sister was kidnapped like she was. He promises that they will find Samantha, and follows her to Agent Collier's room, room #6. Leila asks the captured man where her sister is. When he denies knowing anything about her, Leila squeezes the man's injured left leg, but he says he doesn't know anything about her and says she should blame her father--that he brought what happened to him on himself.
In Washington, DC, Simon comes back to the coffee shop in his SUV, and the head field agent tells him they are still getting flooded by false targets so they locked down the coffee shop. Simon tells him to use the "Silver Brotherford for Dan and Hayes", and for an excuse to say that there is possible homeland security threat in the area. He then tells the rest of the agents to set a half-mile perimeter and work their way back, trying to locate Sophia.
Meanwhile, Sophia is walking along the sidewalk and radios Thomas that she is coming up on Spring Street. A dog someone is walking starts barking at her, and she pauses momentarily. Thomas replies in her earpiece that he will try to keep her away from the CCTV cameras, but to keep her head down as she proceeds.
In the Situation Room, Director Sterling asks for a count on the isotope targets and a man tells him the count is at 59 and holding. He then asks for an override on all CCTV and traffic cameras in the area, and to use them for facial recognition to locate Sophia. The President's aid then speaks privately with Director Sterling. The aid tells Sterling that it had to be the extra targets had to be produced from the same type of liquid isotope used on Sophia, and that he discovered someone had walked out with 100 CCs of the liquid scandium from their armory forty minutes ago. Also, he notes anyone who has handed it should have trace amounts on them, and requests to vet the field team himself with a portable radiation detector. Director Sterling agrees to this, and the aid leaves. On his way out of the White House, he phones Agent Lee and asks him to gather all members of the field team and hold them till he arrives. The aid says he will fill Agent Lee in when he gets there, and that Simon has a problem.
In 1954, Simon and Violet are returning home from the beach. Simon says he wants her to join him in the water next time, but she says she only likes the looking at the water. She agrees to Simon's recommendation to eat dinner in, for him to pick up some fish at the market, and asks him to pick up some sunflowers to light up the house while he is there. As Violet goes inside, Simon walks to the fence, where Thomas is waiting for him. Simon asks Thomas to let him stay, but Thomas says staying in one place is not an option as people would begin to notice he isn't getting any older. Simon replies that he fell in love with her, but Thomas insists and notes that she will have to go if Simon doesn't. He adds that he needs Simon's help to get them home, and doesn't let Simon say goodbye.
Back in the present, President Martinez's aid arrives by car to a parking lot near the coffee shop. He gets out and tells Simon that they have a traitor, and explains about the missing scandium from the armory. The aid then agrees to let Simon test the field team, but notes Simon needs to be tested too. Simon then knocks the aid out with the briefcase containing the detector, and locks him in the President's aid's trunk.
At the motel, Leila and Sean are walking away from the room, and she tells Sean they need to go to her father's house and find something to explain what is happening. Sean doesn't think they will find anything there, and notes Agent Collier has contacted her ex-husband to help her lock up the captured man and get Leila somewhere secure. He notes there is a federal murder warrant out for him for Greg's murder, and that he plans to search for her family and evidence to clear his name by himself. However, Leila insists she needs to come along to help search for her family. In the motel room, the captured man asks Agent Collier about the ambulance, noting that he saw her call for one. She claims not to know why there is a delay, and then rushes out the room, spotting Sean and Leila drive away in the SUV they had taken.
Sean drives himself and Leila to her parents' home. Inside, they find the place has been marked with numbered crime scene signs, and begin searching. Leila pauses briefly when finding Samantha's baby clothes, and then suggests they search the attic. Later, they find a box downstairs, containing a file with articles about Alaska, and a woman sneaks up behind them with a gun. She says they should not have come there.
Simon calls Thomas as he makes his way back to his SUV. He tells Thomas that Sterling's aid made him, and he left him in the trunk of his car. Thomas replies that it is time to move on again.
Ten years earlier, the head field agent catches up with Simon walking down a street in Washington, D.C. He tells Simon they need to celebrate making it through training, instead of going home, and asks why Simon would ask to be stationed in Alaska. Simon claims it is just cause he likes the snow, and then stops walking when he hears someone calling out for Mason. He turns around to see an aged Violet, who wonders aloud how it could be. The other agent asks Simon if he knows her, but before he can answer a caretaker apologizes that she suffers from Alzheimer's, and gets names and faces mixed up. Simon recognizes the bracelet that Violet wore the day he left her in 1954, but says she must have him confused with someone else.
In the Situation Room, Sterling asks to view street camera photos on the center screen which show Sophia walking. President Martinez and Director Sterling watch as they track through the images, taken 10 minutes ago, to where she enters the building Thomas instructed her to. Simon then hears on the radio of his SUV that they spotted Sophia entering the building 0.7 miles east of the Tacoma playground, and warns Thomas to leave using his cellphone. Simon is swerving through traffic to get there quickly, and Thomas tells him just to get there as soon as he can--that he has a contingency plan in place and ends the call. Sophia then arrives to his level, notes that they need to talk but she is happy to see him. She then gives Thomas a hug.
In Leila's parents' home, Sean tells the woman they just found the file, and uses it to get her to come close enough to grab her. Sean thrusts her arm against the wall, and Leila grabs the gun when it falls. Once back upstairs, the woman says her name is Madeline Jackson, and that she used to be a journalist till she saw the light. She says that two years ago, Michael Buchanan contacted her about a flight he was piloting to Anchorage, Alaska. Weather had forced him to divert off-course, and he accidentally saw the unlisted government facility near Inostranka mentioned in the file. He had contacted Madeline, having discovered an article about Inostranka she had posted on her website. Madeline notes that was before her site was hacked out of existence, because they did not want anyone to know. She continues that there are other forces outside the government that want it kept a secret, and Sean says for her to just tell them what Michael had found out. Madeline then tells Sean and Leila about the 1944 aircraft crash in the Brooks Range of Alaska, that the survivors of the crash are kept at the facility, and that they are extraterrestrials.
In the Situation Room, Director Sterling shows President Martinez video of a man entering the same building as Sophia two hours earlier. The President says he knows that Thomas is the man entering the building, and the Director says field agents should have the building surrounded in minutes.
Simon then arrives to the building in his SUV and uses a crowbar to pry open the lock of one of the doors and head inside. He calls out for Thomas, and hears on the radio that the field team should arrive within a couple minutes. Outside, other federal vehicles arrive and an FBI SWAT team begins to enter the building. The field team follows behind them, guns drawn.
Simon makes his way down to a basement level of the building, and catches up with Thomas and Sophia. As Thomas prepares to open an underground exit, Simon says every field team in the DC area is on their way--that they will not be able to escape that way. However, then the building begins to shake and Thomas says he has it covered. Sophia wonders what Thomas has done, and Simon asks him to call it off. Thomas says he can't do that, promises Sophia that there is nothing he can do, and says they need to go. Sophia then pleads with Simon to come with them, but Simon says he is sorry and refuses.
Ten years ago, Simon visits Violet in her room, bringing with him a sunflower as he knows how much she liked them. He admits that he is the man, Mason, she knew, and replies that he is far from being an angel. Simon says he is so sorry for everything, and asks for her forgiveness. Violet says she waited for him for so long, and Simon replies that he never stopped loving her. He also says that, if it were up to him, they would have gotten married, had children, and grown old together. Violet says it was up to him and Simon begins to cry, saying he is sorry.
Back in the present, Sophia continues to plead with Simon to come along until she falls or gets pulled down into the exit. The head field agent then radios Simon to see if he is inside, and Simon radios an order to immediately evacuate the building. As Simon begins climbing back up towards the ground-level, the building begins to fall apart, with pieces of the ceiling collapsing before him. One piece knocks him to the ground, but he gets up and continues, yelling for everyone to get out. He yells to an FBI SWAT agent on the stairs, Troy, to get out with his men, but a piece of debris strikes Troy and he collapses. Agent Lee then goes to Troy's side on the stairwell, and calls out for help to carry him out, when he turns around to see the basement floor behind him collapse into a blueish vortex. The head field agent, Mike, then arrives on the stairwell, and pauses at the sight of the vortex. Simon gets him to help carry Troy and they begin to ascend the stairwell.
On the level above, they dodge the collapse of a thick concrete support beam, then climb over it. They then have to go through a narrow path between a wooden table and a piped construction tower, so Mike goes first, carrying Troy by himself. Simon follows, but the tower tips over onto the table, sending Simon to the ground. Simon continues, crawling through the gap under the knocked-over tower. When the other field agent turns back to help him, Simon yells for the him to keep going--that he will be right behind them. The other agent then rushes away and Simon finishes crawling out from under the tower. Almost to the exit, Simon dodges some falling debris until the ceiling gives way and he is covered with the debris and a cloud of dust.
In the Situation Room, President Martinez, Director Sterling, and the rest of the President's staff watch an aerial view of the building on the center screen. The cloud of dust becomes visible, expanding out the front of the ground-level, almost to the street. Then, the multi-story building completely implodes into a pile of rubble, creating a huge cloud of dust in its wake.
Back near the building, field agent Mike begins to get up, appearing to not been seriously hurt by the collapse. He coughs some, and turns around to search for Simon. As a nearby FBI Agent moves his head slightly while laying on the ground, Mike crawls up the rubble, and finding himself at the top of a three-story crater, yells out calling for Simon.
