Synopsis
Sean pulls up outside the Pearblossom Motel in a Yuma County Sheriff's patrol car. He enters room 11 with a bag of medical supplies for his arresting agent. She is injured, with a piece of shrapnel piercing her right shoulder. Sean pours a chemical on the wound, and places a gauze pad around it. After telling himself he can do it and counting to three, he goes to pull it out.
Two hours ago, Sean is in the custody of two federal agents. They arrive at a roadblock set up to divert civilians from seeing the Avias 514 crash site, and are told by a sheriff to take a detour. Sean tries in vain to convince them to drive up ahead, and as Agent Hobbes turns back, they collide with an RV. The sheriff enforcing the road block is sandwiched between his vehicle and the agent's, and is killed on impact, as was Hobbes, and the driver of the RV. Sean manages to crawl out relatively unscathed, and uncuffs himself. Sean notices the second, female agent, Agent Collier, is still alive, and pulls her from the car. She tries to run back to her partner, but the fire ignites with the fuel causing a mini-explosion. The pair run to the only intact car, the police vehicle, and drive off as the entire scene goes up in flames.
Two hours later, Agent Collier comes to in a bed in the Pearblossom Motel. She is cuffed to the bed, and bloodied after Sean's removal of her shrapnel. Sean offers her aspirin, which she cautiously rejects. Collier tries to convince Sean to give himself up, but he tries to explain his situation to her. He explains that he has cracked her password, and plans on using facial recognition software to identify Vicky and uncover the truth of what is happening. His plans are cut short when he is told that in order to do that, he needs to access the FBI's intranet: he needs to be at a field office to access it. Sean goes to the bathroom to get cleaned up, and once out of the room, Angie manages to get her phone from her handbag. She contacts the police to come to the motel to save her, and arrest Sean. As she does this, Sean listens from the bathroom.
In Washington, Vice President Raymond Jarvis has a meeting with Director Sterling at his office. He expresses concerns regarding the assassination attempt on the life of Elias Martinez as being motivated by the reveal of the 97 prisoners at Inostranka. When Sterling assures him that it is being considered, Jarvis implies that he views Sterling as a suspect by asking who was investigating the investigator. Sterling tells him that his concern has been noted, and he leaves for Arizona with the President.
Director Sterling explains to President Martinez various pieces of information regarding what the government's response to this incident will be: they plan on covering it up. Their plan is to treat the deceased to appear as though they have been in a plane crash, and move the plane to the middle of a Brazilian rainforest - where a search party would take days to reach. The Director also explains that since Michael Buchanan was identified amongst the dead, he will not be answering any questions about the assassination attempt. The President shows concern that the families of the victims will never know what happened to them, but Blake counters, claiming that simply knowing the truth will not bring them back. He says that their priority should be to protect the American people. The President asks if the people are being protected from the truth.
Simon Lee answers questions relating to what killed the people, showing that the dead assumed defensive positions to shield loved ones, and tried to run away, showing that they saw what killed them coming. The President notes his desire for whoever did this to be found, and Sterling suggests that they could try more "aggressive interrogation techniques", seeing as how their current interrogation methods are not cracking Sophia. President Martinez responds that he cannot condone the use of torture, and has a better way.
He has another meeting with Sophia, where he makes her look at the photos of the Avias 514 passengers. The President gives her one last chance to redeem herself by giving him information, but she refuses to do so. It is then that Elias tells her that he had an announcement made at Inostranka. Whoever provides the government with information about recent events will be freed, permanently.
Sophia says that this won't work; that they will stand together through silence. She is proven wrong minutes later when detainee William comes forward, prepared to talk in exchange for securing his freedom.
Elsewhere, an FBI team converges on the motel housing both Collier and Sean. After breaking down the door, Collier tells a gunman that Sean is in the bathroom. In the bathroom, the shower is running, but Sean is nowhere to be seen, leaving behind nothing but an open window. A short time later, Agent Collier is being driven back to the office, and is waxing on about how Sean saved her, even though he could have just left her there and escaped. The driver says nothing. When they arrive at the office, Collier expresses concern that she isn't out there, looking for Sean, but Agent Spencer explains that every cop in a 50 mile radius is doing just that.
As they walk inside for Collier's debriefing, she explains to Agent Spencer what she believes to be Walker's fantasy, about Leila's kidnapping, the disappearing plane, and Vicky. Spencer concludes that he's delusional, but Collier notes that he was very convinced in what he was talking about.
Back in the parking lot, Walker climbs out of the boot of the car, Collier's Netbook in hand. He sprints across the car park to a door that he opens, after listening for people on the other side. Back inside, Collier sees the news report about Avias Air 514 disappearing "somewhere over the Brazilian rainforest". The other Agent says that Walker must have seen this report and dropped it into his fantasy, but she notes that Walker told her about this 4 hours ago, despite the newswoman stating the plane lost radio contact just one hour ago. Spencer concludes that the reporter must have the time frame wrong. Meanwhile, Walker hooks into the FBI's intranet, and enters in her password, starting up the facial recognition software with the image of Vicky's face.
As this is happening in Arizona, Vicky still has Leila in Miami. Leila comes to, and starts struggling with the restraints. Vicky advises her to calm down, and reminds her that they are "almost there". No sooner are the words out of her mouth than sirens start in her mirrors, and a cop from the Port of Miami police department pulls her over. He tells Vicky that she has a busted tail light, and she explains that it's a friend's van. She hands him her license, and he asks to see the back of her van, where Leila is stored. She tries to talk him out of it through bribery, and when that fails, she shoots him dead and stores his body in the back next to Leila.
Back in Arizona, Agent Collier is being debriefed, and is explaining what occurred in the past few hours. As she does this, she notices that her Netbook is missing, and notes that Sean must be in the building to use it. Just as the software recognizes Vicky and brings up her details, the police barge in and arrest Sean. As he fruitlessly tries to explain what must be done, the software brings up multiple ID matches for Vicky Roberts, matching the same woman to at least 7 different identities, spanning multiple states. He reasons that no innocent person would need that many IDs, but is dragged out kicking and screaming.
Back in a secure facility in Washington, DC, William is reclining in a suite when Blake Sterling arrives. William asks if Blake would pour him a glass of water, clearly enjoying the shift in the balance of power, asking for ice with his water. Blake explains to William what is that they want to know - they want to know who is responsible for what happened to Flight 514, how they did it, and where they are. William laughs at this, finding it funny that that is all they want to know. When Sterling asks for the answers to these questions, William makes his demands - he wants money, protection, a house far away from Inostranka, and finally, he wants his girlfriend, Maya. He says that Blake might know her better as "Number 31".
In a flashback to November 2, 1944, Maya and William are in the aftermath of the crashing of an unidentified aircraft. Thomas is leaving with the able bodied, and William wants to leave with Maya. Sophia notices William's ankle injury, and tells him she can't let him leave with the others. She gives Maya the option to leave with Thomas, but Maya opts to stay with her boyfriend.
Blake Sterling tells William he will need to make a call, and leaves the room. He phones President Martinez, who picks up the phone in a room with a large screen displaying William's suite. Director Sterling tells the President that he thinks William is telling the truth that he will give them the information, and the President tells the Director to give him what he wants.
Meanwhile, Agent Lee meets secretly with Sophia, and tells her about William making a deal with the government. She tells Simon that she knows he hasn't told them everything yet cause they are still alive. Sophia adds that she had felt that it was her responsibility to protect them all, but now thinks that they will have to deal with him harshly.
Some time later, Director Sterling meets with one of his agents that is reviewing the black box audio tape recovered from the plane. He tells the director that Sean Walker is on the tape, shows him a photo that shows Sean sneaking on board as part of the maintenance crew, and a paper that shows him wanted for murder. After listening to the information about Sean, the Director orders the agent to immediately bring Sean in for questioning, and to keep the information as strictly need-to-know.
In Yuma, Collier notes from her computer that of seven identities they have for Vicky, only one, Erica Bartlett, seemed to exist prior to 2002. She continues that Erica was supposedly killed in a car accident while studying Mandarin at the Xingxai Institute in Hong Kong, and that Xingxai was supposedly a shadow organization with ties to the NSA. She tells the agent that rescued her at the motel that Vicky doesn't work for the government according to any official record, but one alias, Melissa Wade, briefly resided in a government subsidized building known to house young intelligence trainees. The agent responds that he contacted the FAA, and no controllers or staff related to Avias 514 were available, and all computers containing records regarding the flight seemed to be down.
Agent Collier is then told that U.S. Marshals have arrived, claiming to have a transport order for Sean Walker. Noting her surprise that transfer was approved before processing was completed, she greets the two marshals and tells them she will go collect him from her office. Once inside, she calls the Washington field office to verify the order came from Issac Douglas, but someone cuts the call and notifies the marshals. They pull out semi-automatic rifles, and begin shooting agents at will, starting with the agent that rescued Collier at the motel. As a shootout ensues, and other FBI agents go down, Sean knocks the chair he's cuffed to onto the floor, and Collier tosses Sean keys to free himself. She then leaves to confront the gunmen, and one of them enters her office and takes aim at Sean.
In Miami, Vicky drives her white van to a dock with lots of cargo containers labeled as belonging to the Maersk Sealand line. After parking, Vicky escorts another of the kidnappers that takes Leila into one of the containers. Another kidnapper tells Leila he will dispose of the collateral damage, and the two leave Vicky and Leila alone in the open container. Leila tries to reason with Vicky, but is interrupted by Vicky forcing Leila to share some of her thirst quencher. Leila insists that Sean will never stop looking for her, then sticks Vicky in the neck with the policeman's badge, using an arm she had freed. However, this only causes minor injury to Vicky, who kicks away the badge, beats Leila into sitting down, and then locks her alone in the container.
Back in Yuma, Agent Collier shoots the gunman through the glass of an office window before he can kill Sean, and then proceeds to flank the other gunman and tells him to drop his weapon. When the man just freezes, Sean rushes up from behind and knocks the man out with a fire extinguisher. Collier tells Sean to get the man's keys and they head to the parking garage. Use the sound of the alarm Sean activates with the key remote, they locate the gunman's SUV, just as he enters the parking lot searching for them. The gunman gets a shot off, shattering their back windshield, but they manage to leave in the SUV unharmed.
In D.C., agents bring Maya to William's suite. He tells her he made a deal to trade information for them to be free, but hasn't told them anything yet. She replies that was smart and good. They proceed to a window overlooking the mall, and William begins talking about the moment being better than he imagined. Maya says he is glad, stabs him in the stomach with a cloth-covered shank, and tells him to keep imagining.
In the Port of Miami, Leila hears a dog barking outside her container and briefly screams and beats the wall for help. Vicky then opens the container and points a gun at her head. She begins to squeeze on the trigger, but her cell phone rings so she waits and takes the call. The gunman that was just chasing Sean and Collier tells Vicky that Sean got away from him and his fellow gunman, Smith. He also notes that it looks that Sean got a FBI agent to help him, so it looks like they will still need his girlfriend. When Vicky then acknowledges and disconnects, Leila says she told her than Sean would come back for her. Vicky responds with a right cross to Leila's face.
Meanwhile, a soldier is patrolling the makeshift morgue where the Avias 514 victims have been lined up in rows along the cement floor. As he walks along, he notices a young girl appearing to wake up and open her eyes and radios for help. Then, one by one, the other passengers begin waking up. The soldier radios that they are all waking up, and that he needs help now.
