Synopsis
In a law firm conference room, an African-American woman says that her husband was married to her 47 years, and his work during that time in a man's factory did not only take her husband, but tainted her memories of their life together. An attorney, Isabel, replies that the woman's husband's illness, pulmonary fibrosis, could also be caused due to a number of things including his smoking, genetics, and acid reflux. The plaintiff responds that it is insulting to suggest her husband could of died from heartburn when he spent half his life breathing toxic dust at the factory. Isabel replies, warning that the memories of the woman's life with her husband will only get worse when the case goes to trial in front of a jury. The African-American woman is then silent for a moment, and nods to a man sitting next to her. Isabel then gets a text message with the numbers "1121944". A couple of men eating in dining rooms, a police officer walking down the street to his police car, and a postal worker pushing a mail cart along a sidewalk, among others, all get the same text message.
Later, the postal lady, now dressed in business attire, walks through a building lobby with a similarly dressed man. He asks the woman how her postal work is going, and she says the benefits are good but she is thinking of moving on cause she is on her feet all day. One of the two men eating, a college professor, talks with another man about students cheating on their midterms. The police officer, now dressed in casual attire, accompanies Isabel in the lobby, and asks how she can represent such an evil person as the factory owner. Isabel responds that everyone deserves a good defense. All of the people walking through the lobby take a standing spot in a crowded dark auditorium. Some time later, Sophia and Thomas enter through a door and make their way to a podium at the front of the auditorium. Everyone in the audience then takes a seat as Sophia greets them. She says it is a pleasure to see them all again after so many years, and hundreds of them, all of them sleepers, stand up and applaud.
Some additional time later, Sophia and Thomas are alone with Simon and five representatives for the sleepers. Sophia says that her people's days here are numbered now that President Martinez knows the sleepers group exists. She continues that Thomas has been busy trying to build the infrastructure for them to get home, and that she will now take over that effort. Sophia adds also that they will need to start retrieving some of the materials from after the crash, isotopes and raw materials, that will allow them to open a portal. However, she then stops talking. Sophia asks someone to tell her why they feel uncomfortable. When no one speaks up, she asks Isabel to do so, saying that the others appear to be looking to her to do so. Isabel says that they all appreciate the sacrifices Sophia and the other detainees have made, but most of them like it here and no longer want to go home. Sophia glances at Thomas, and then asks how widespread the feeling is. A male representative then says that the majority of the people he represents also feels this way, and another female representative explains that they have built families and a life here. Sophia responds that she understands their feelings, but they know what their staying will ultimately do to the native population. She adds that they are also sworn to follow the same directives, which include to not damage benevolent civilizations. The male representative counters that their home is barely viable and there are other dangers he does not need to lay out. Sophia responds that she hears him, but they must follow the oath they all swore. She continues by promising they will find a way to survive, but her orders remain for all her people to return home. Thomas says for the representatives to return and tell their people that is the decision. He continues that Sophia and him will retrieve the key module tomorrow, and they can move on to the next phase after the module is activated.
Leaving the auditorium, Sophia asks Thomas if he knew about this dissension from her plans, and Thomas admits had heard some people talk about it but did not know how widespread the feeling was. Sophia responds that he should have known--that it was his job to know. Thomas says he was focused on advancing the local population to the point where they can produce the raw materials they need. Sophia says she appreciates that, but counters that the truth is that he has been doing other things as well. Thomas asks what she is talking about, and Sophia mentions the huge financial empire he built. He responds he already said that was only in the interest of getting them home. Sophia then asks if there is something else he wants to admit he has been up to. Thomas responds that Sophia is trying to again to him what she did when he was younger--pretending to know he had misbehaved to see if he would confess to anything. Sophia replies that it used to work, and Thomas answers her that the trip will take two hours each direction to retrieve the module tomorrow. Simon then catches up with them, and Thomas turns the other way. He says he has meetings with some bankers to attend to, and will see them in the morning.
In the afternoon, Thomas meets with Isabel by a lake with a view of the Capitol building. He tells Isabel that he has been discreet such that no one knows about them, and asks Isabel about her discussion after the meeting. She replies that she had to choose her words carefully. She continues that if they knew what they were planning, they would object. However, she believes it is clear they will accept Thomas as the new leader if they go through with their plan. Isabel then kisses Thomas, and asks him to think of what they could accomplish with him in charge. He then tells Isabel to stop trying to manipulate him, and that their plan is not about us but him and what he thinks is best for their people. Thomas continues that his mother has given him no choice, and that he has to kill her after they collect the module.
Elsewhere, Leila is kissing Sean on a motel bed. He admits to Leila that his shoulder wound still hurts, and his phone rings with a call from Agent Collier. Sean answers the call and Angie asks if he is okay. He responds that they are holding out, but are still nowhere in terms of finding Leila's sister. Sean then mentions that he sent her some information, and Angie confirms the list he sent corresponds to missing girls between age 7-8 and all reported missing within the past two years. She continues that all the girls are unsolved, without any breaks in any of the cases until three days ago. Agent Collier says that one of the victims, Abby Stern, managed to escape her captors, but that her initial interview was sealed along with all case information. She tells Sean that the girl is now back with her parents, and they live just outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Angie continues that she will text him the address, and maybe he can find out more. Sean then thanks Agent Collier, and she replies that he can call her Angela. After he disconnects, Leila tells Sean they can be in Tulsa in twelve hours if they leave right away. While they get ready to leave, a female news reporter on television talks about the attempted assassination of Vice President Jarvis.
In the hospital, Vice President Jarvis is laying unconscious in a hospital bed. Outside his room, Director Sterling talks with President Martinez about his condition. Director Sterling says that the next 16 hours will be critical for him, and that the Vice President is lucky to be alive--the Secret Service agent accompanying Vice President Jarvis shielded him from most of the blast. President Martinez replies that it is hard for him to deal with the fact he has had a traitor in his own house. The Vice President's wife, who has been talking with a doctor about her husband's condition, then approaches them. She tells President Martinez she does not understand what has happened, and the President replies that her husband is a fighter. She responds by thanking President Martinez for being there, and says that he was like family to him. President Martinez then comforts her in his arms, promising that they will find whomever is responsible.
At his desk at home, James Dempsey examines profiles of the missing girls while a male operative talks to him. The man says that Vice President Jarvis is still unconscious; and James says that they cannot take any chances, they need to get to him. When the operative, Mr. Berg, replies that he is under very heavy guard, James says that there is always a way. He then tells Berg that he currently needs his services on another assignment, to reacquire a girl they recently lost. James hands Berg a profile of the girl, and Berg asks if he should administer a dose when he finds her. James replies that is a good thought, and hands Berg an injection kit, noting that in terms of witnesses, Berg should clean up after himself. Berg replies that he understands and leaves.
At the Stern residence, Sean rings the doorbell outside the front door. Leila notes that a shutter just closes, so there must be someone home. She then knocks on the door, saying they know someone is inside and are not leaving. Mrs. Stern then answers the door, but says they are not speaking to journalists. Leila explains they are there because her sister is missing, and they think it is connected to what happened to Abby. Mrs. Stern allows them in, and they pass a travel bag that is next to the door. A couple of suitcases are also visible in the kitchen. Mrs. Stern returns from checking on Abby, asks them to keep their voices down, and notes she did not get their names. Leila introduces herself and Sean, and Mrs. Stern says that Abby does not remember anything about the people who took her or where they kept her. She continues that the police kept trying to get information, and finally let Abby go this morning. Mrs. Stern answers Sean that Abby was found at a truck stop in Stonewall, and had gotten a ride from a truck driver but did not know where she was held. When Leila then asks to see Abby, Mrs. Stern refuses to allow it, saying that Abby is resting. She continues that everything should be okay now that Abby is home, but it isn't. Mr. Stern then arrives through the front door and asks who they are. He tells Leila that it is not possible for them to talk to Abby, and asks his wife, Mary, how she could let them inside. Leila explains that she is looking for her missing sister. Then, Abby comes out some from her room, staying in the dark, and asks if Leila is Samantha's sister--that Samantha mentioned her. Mary tells Abby to return to her room, and Mr. Stern asks them to leave or he will call the police. Sean then tells Leila they need to go. Mr. Stern then shows Leila and Sean out the door and says he is sorry as he closes it.
Elsewhere, Isabel is kissing Thomas in his bed, and asks Thomas if he is sure Sophia does not suspect anything. Thomas says that if she did, she would not be going with him, and to stop doubting him. Isabel responds that he has to stop thinking he is as smart as his mother, cause he isn't. Thomas then says to get off of him, and Isabel gets up and put on a robe. Isabel tells him that once he has retrieved the module and killed Sophia, to take the elevator to level 3 and open the emergency hatch to find the plastic shielding and packing bag for the body. Thomas says they have already been over this, and asks Isabel for the gun. Isabel takes a pistol from her purse, and says she talked to a friend that knows about guns who suggested to use a 380 for stopping power and low velocity rounds so the bullet does not exit the head. As she loads the gun, Isabel continues that that way there is no cleanup. She then kisses Thomas again.
Later, Thomas and Sophia ride in a private jet. Sophia comments that it must be hard for Thomas to no longer be in charge, and says he has handled it much better than she expected. Thomas asks her what she means, and notes that he cannot take that as a complement. Sophia then says they could have escaped Inostranka any number of ways, but stayed there as they were protecting him and the others cause they were strong. She then reminds Thomas that when he was younger, he was afraid of the rain as if it was the end of the world. To help him, Sophia took him outside during a rainstorm and left him there to see there was nothing bad about it. However, he just cried for hours. Sophia says she realized afterwards that she should have taken him in and protected him, and was dumb trying to force him to be someone he is not. Thomas notes that was a long time ago, and Sophia replies that she repeated her mistake and needs to accept him for who he is and stop putting him in situations he cannot handle. She continues she knows this isn't what he wants to hear, and is sorry. Thomas responds that he is sorry too.
Arriving by car, a driver helps Thomas and Sophia get out and they enter a multi-story building. They proceed into an elevator by themselves, and Sophia asks where it is as Thomas enters a code on the elevator control box. Thomas says it is down, and, a short while later, they arrive to a dark room. When Thomas gets the lights, the room appears to be vacant except for a rectangular slab on the floor. Thomas then hits another switch on the wall, and the slab slides to the side to reveal a rectangular pedestal that rises from the floor to about knee height. On the third try, Thomas unlocks a panel on the top of the pedestal. Sophia and Thomas then lift off the panel and a box rises from the pedestal to waist height and stops. Thomas says it is now her turn, and Sophia approaches the box and her left arm appears to phase through the top of it. Sophia then pulls out the key module from inside this box, a small hand-sized cylinder with a few glowing rings on it. She says it is still viable, noting that she was worried it might have been damaged during the crash. When Sophia turns around, she sees Thomas is pointing a gun at her and he asks for the key. After placing it in his left pocket, he asks Sophia to turn around but she refuses, saying she wants him to see her face when he pulls the trigger. Thomas says that will not make it harder for him, and she has no idea who he is or whom he has become. Sophia says she does, and that this is not something he gets to on his own, and suspects he is choosing Isabel over her. Thomas replies that he is choosing himself, and is done living in Sophia's shadow. Sophia responds that Thomas does not have it in him, and dares him to prove her wrong. She tells him to do it, but he just shakes his head, drops the gun, and cries, falling to his knees. Sophia comes to his side and kisses his forehead, telling him she loves him.
Near Tulsa, Oklahoma, Sean and Leila watch the Sterns' residence from their car, parked across the street. Mr. Stern, his wife, and daughter, then exit their home and load their car, with their travel bags and suitcases. Leila wonders if they scared them. Sean thinks they did, but that is not why they are leaving. Sean then starts the car, and they follow their car so they can get a chance to talk to Abby. Dempsey's operative, Berg, also follows them in his own car. Sean and Leila follow the Sterns into a gas station next to a Wego motel, and Leila gets out to talk to Mary and Abby Stern in the woman's restroom. While she does so, Mr. Stern heads into the store and Sean spots someone watching them.
In the restroom, Leila tells Mary that she has to ask Abby about her sister, Samantha, and that she is desperate to get whatever information she can get. However, Mary does not want Abby doing so and asks Abby to hurry up so they can leave. Abby exits the bathroom stall, and Leila sees that Abby looks older than a 7-8 year old girl. Abby then tells her mother that she wants to talk to Leila, and covers her head with the hood of her sweatshirt. Leila asks if she saw Sammy, and Abby replies that Samantha got there a couple days before Abby ran away. Samantha is scared and coloring a paper with a marker, when Abby approaches and embraces her. Abby says that she was scared, but still young--that all the girls are young when they first get there. Leila asks if all the girls are like her, and Abby says that only some of them. Abby continues that the nurse there says that they are helping people, but bad things happened when they received the injections. She then answers Leila that the place was like a hospital, but not for regular people, and that there was a triangle on the medicine. Mary says they mentioned this to the police, but they said it was too vague to help them. Abby also notes that when she got out of the hospital, there was a big tower, and confirms to Leila that it looked like a water tower.
Mr. Stern exits the gas station store with a couple bags, and heads to his car, which is filling with gas. Sean then notices Berg approaching the man, his hand inside his jacket. When he sees him pull out a gun, Sean gets out from his car and yells to Mr. Stern to watch out behind him as he limps toward him. Mr. Stern ducks behind his car as Berg begins shooting, and Sean heads to the restrooms to find Leila and the others. Leila, Mary, and Abby hear the gunshots inside the restroom, and then Sean yells to them that they need to go now. Together, the four of them then rush past a tractor into a cornfield. Meanwhile, Mr. Stern yells for Abby to run, as he collapses by his car, having been shot just about the right knee by Dempsey's operative. Berg chases them into the cornfield, and Mary collapses, having hurt her ankle in the rush. Mary tells Leila to protect Abby, and the two of them take off in another direction as Sean tries to help Mary keep moving a different way. The operative finds Mary's purse on the ground, and rushes towards Sean and Mary, firing on them. Sean tells Mrs. Stern to keep going, and double back to draw Berg away. However, Abby begins yelling for her mother and Berg turns towards the sound of the yells. Berg then almost catches up to Abby when Sean jumps him from behind and begins fighting with him. Leila tries to get Berg's gun, but Berg shoves her aside. He then tries to strangle Sean, but Sean is able to knock him out with a rock while Leila secures his firearm. Mrs. Stern finds her daughter, Abby, and Leila calls out to them that it is okay. However, Mrs. Stern and Abby continues to rush away. Sean searches through Berg's belonging, and showing Leila a profile with her name and photo on it, says that he thinks the man was there for her, not Abby.
In the hospital, Vice President Jarvis wakes up and his wife, Erika, kisses him, happy to see him awake. The Vice President jokes about it not being easy for her to get rid of him, and a nurse says to let her know if he needs anything before leaving. Vice President Jarvis says everything will be alright once he talks to the President, and Erika says he cannot do that as two men came to their house. She answers that she and their children are fine. However, she continues that the men knew their kids' names and where they are, and threatened to harm her and the children. He responds that he is sorry, that is was not supposed to happen like this, and Erika asks what he did to them. As President Martinez and Director Sterling arrive, Erika tells him to think about their children.
Later, Sophia greets Isabel at night, by the lake where Thomas had met Isabel earlier. Sophia tells Isabel she needs to worry about her, cause Thomas told her everything. Isabel claims she was only doing what Thomas wanted, and Sophia says she knows that is not true. Sophia adds that Isabel pushed Thomas, which is what he truly wanted--someone to push him to be more than he truly is. She continues that since Thomas is her son, she will deal with him as she wants, but cannot ignore Isabel's disloyalty. Sophia forces Isabel on her knees, and gives her the choice to be ostracized from the rest of her kind, or to shoot herself with the gun Sophia gives her. She tells Isabel the gun only has one bullet, so she could not be certain of killing her but she can prove her loyalty. Isabel says she cannot do it, so Sophia says to go but she will not be able to live among them if she cannot be sure of her allegiance. Isabel tries to plead with Sophia, but Sophia does not bend so Isabel shoots herself above the knee and collapses in pain. Sophia tells Isabel to remember that this world is not hers or Thomas's, and then leaves. She gets in the passenger side of Thomas's car, telling Thomas she knows this is not easy for him, and then permits him to drive them away.
