Michael Buchanan is the father of Leila and Samantha Buchanan, and the husband of Valerie Buchanan. When Leila disappears, he too is kidnapped, and at threat of the death of his daughter, is forced to fly Flight 514 and crash it into the President's Retreat.

Character History

2005

In November, Michael and his wife spend Thanksgiving dinner with Leila and Sean. After Leila introduces Sean, he tells the Buchanans of his family and they bond over the dinner. (A Matter of Life and Death)

2010

On September 9, Michael is visited at his home by his daughter's boyfriend, who asks for his blessing. Michael swiftly agrees to let Sean propose to Leila on their upcoming cruise trip, as long as he protects and cherishes her. Michael then departs his home with Sean and Leila in Sean's car.

Three days later, back at his home, Michael talks with his wife about giving Leila more space than his seven year old daughter, but then decides to call her. Later, two people enter the Buchanan home and one of them fires two shots. (I Haven't Told You Everything)

On September 16, Michael is held tied up in a chair. One of his captors removes a covering from Michael's head, and uses Leila as bait to persuade Michael to agree to fly Flight 514. (To Keep Us Safe)

Four days later, Michael appears dressed as an airline captain and boards Flight 514. He is greeted by the stewardess, Maureen Donovan, and enters the cockpit. The co-pilot says he thought he was going to be flying alone, but Michael says there was a scheduling change.

Michael tells Sean why he hijacked Avias 514.

During the flight, Michael shoots the co-pilot and changes course towards the President's Retreat. Eventually, as he steers the plane towards the retreat, the plane and everyone on it are enveloped by a large blast of light. (I Haven't Told You Everything)

The plane reappears in Arizona and Michael is the last to exit the downed plane. He staggers over to Sean and begins to apologize for his actions, saying that a mysterious group (including Vicky) threatened to kill Leila if he didn't do as they asked. As the survivors see a group of helicopters approaching, he frantically insists that they do not mean to help the passengers and demands that Sean leave and find help.

Michael's body is the first found by Agent Lee and his team when they arrive at the site of the crash. (To Keep Us Safe) His body was seen again as Sterling and Elias arrived at the 514 site in Arizona. (Protect Them from the Truth)

Following the awakening of the Flight 514 passengers, Michael is interrogated by Blake Sterling for information regarding the plane he was flying. He expresses more concern for the safety of his family than he does for himself, and only manages to reveal marginal pieces of information pertaining to the incident. Later that night he, like the other passengers, goes into a state of shock and begins bleeding (A Matter of Life and Death). Later, he goes into dramatic arrest and bleeds profusely as medical staff attempt to attend to him. After an antidote is administered, however, he returns to his normal state (Casualties of War).
