Synopsis
Somewhere in the desert, a whirring noise is heard, and a blue cloud, seemingly emerging from nowhere, spits out Avias Airways Flight 514. The plane descends dangerously, and a wing clips a rock formation. Finally, it grinds to a halt in a cloud of dust. As the passengers begin to collect themselves, a fire breaks out in the back of the plane. Sean opens the front escape hatch, and the passengers begin to evacuate through the different emergency exits. The air marshal is trapped in the back, having decided to put out the fire with an extinguisher. Sean helps him to the front, and the two slide from the plane. The marshal collapses, and Sean and an attendant are at his side. The stewardess notices one man still coming from the plane—it's Michael.
Four days ago, Michael Buchanan is held tied up in a chair. One of his captors removes a covering from Michael's head, and forces him to witness Vicky pointing a gun at Leila's head. Michael is forced to agree to fly the plane, the kidnapper reminding him that he watched them kill his wife and claiming they will not hesitate to kill both his daughters too.
Back in the present, Michael tells Sean about his wife's murder and the kidnappings, naming Vicky as one of the captors who is holding Leila hostage. Sean thinks it must be Vicky from the cruise, and Michael continues to say that he was being held hostage somewhere in Miami. Then, another passenger exclaims that help is coming. A fleet of black helicopters are approaching the crash site. Michael claims that they are not help, and that Sean has to leave and find Leila. So Sean flees deeper into the desert as the choppers descend.
Meanwhile, at the President's Retreat, the secret service agents close the door on President Martinez's vehicle, which leaves the retreat and travels in a motorcade to a hangar/warehouse at the airport. President Martinez and his family exit the vehicle, and Director Sterling greets the President. The Director informs the President about the plane's hijacking, claiming the intent was to crash into the Presidential compound. The President, Director, and another executive enter a secure area of the warehouse to be briefed. The executive informs that the air traffic control tower and Presidential compound have been locked down, and nothing has been broadcast live. The plane is supposedly still en route to Brazil, and a mid-altitude marine layer is responsible for temporarily obscuring the plane. A military officer explains that a satellite recorded an EM burst in the vicinity at the time of the incident, and that is likely responsible for knocking out all the electronics at the site. When the officer explains that no known military has such technology, Director Sterling notes his belief it must be the Mount Inostranka detainees group that is responsible for what happened to the plane.
Thirteen months earlier, President Martinez meets with his staff and Director Sterling explains about the detainees. He notes they are survivors of a 1944 crash of an aircraft of undeclared origin in the Brooks Mountain Range in Alaska, and hands the President some photos. Director Sterling then says that the detainees are not of terrestrial origin, and Agent Simon Lee explains some of the physiological differences, including that they age slower than normal humans. Agent Lee adds that the DNA difference is slightly less than 1%. The Director then informs that the prisoners are being held because they refuse to tell the truth about who they are, why they are here, and what they want. He believes that they have a hidden agenda.
Back in the present, Sean walks through the desert along a stony path until he collapses from exhaustion.
Seven days prior, in their cruise ship room, Sean and Leila discuss why she feels sick and Sean says he plans to stay with her. Vicky then arrives, saying that she got Sean's message and wants to change his mind. She claims Greg went on a jungle excursion and she needs a diving buddy. Sean wants to stay, but Leila says that Sean will go, and they leave together after Sean gets his backpack.
Then, Leila answers a knock on her door and it's Greg. He says he came to see if she needed some help, and barges in the room. Greg fixes her a glass of water and drops a dissoluble tablet in it that he claims has lots of Vitamin C. However, Leila sets it aside and, getting into bed, says she just plans to get some rest. He then offers to give Leila a massage, asking what he thinks Vicky and Sean are doing. Leila stops Greg from touching her, and asks him to leave. When he doesn't move, she decides to go and finds a security officer at the door. The officer asks Greg to leave, and then appears to stab him in the chest with a knife. Leila rushes out into the hall, but is caught by two security officers and tranquilized with a needle.
In present time, Sean wakes up as a nurse examines him. She explains that they are in St. Francis Hospital, just outside of Yuma, Arizona, and that he likely had a heat stroke. Sean tries to explain his story, and asks the nurse if he can phone the police so he can make a statement. She responds that she will contact them for him, and for him to get some rest. The nurse then goes to the front desk and phones the Yuma County Sheriff's office. The officer there searches Sean's name in his computer, and it comes up that he is wanted for Greg's murder. He tells the nurse to hold Sean there, and that officers are on the way.
Meanwhile, President Martinez rides with Director Sterling on a golf cart to Sophia's cell. The Director notes his belief that there must be others on the outside, working with them, and wonders why the President thinks he can get the truth out of them now.
On November 2, 1944, the pilot of a single-person spotter plane, Red-7, radios that he has a visual on the crash site in the Brooks Mountain Range as he passes over it. On the ground, Thomas tells Sophia that they have been spotted. He says they need to move everyone out, but she says there are too many wounded and she can't risk everyone getting caught. Instead, Sophia asks Thomas to gather all the able bodies and leave without her. She promises that they will be together again soon.
Hours following the plane's disappearance, Elias speaks with Sophia, who is locked in a cell, and restrained to a steel chair. The President claims that he regrets his decision to announce the freedom of Sophia's people. He says he feels that this announcement is the reason for the hijacking of Flight 514. He asks Sophia why he was deceived, to which she replies that her people mean them no harm, and that her people saved his life. When Martinez asks more questions, including where the plane has disappeared to and how many more of her people are out there, she replies that she can't tell him. When Elias tells her that she and her people are staying at Inostranka, she tells him that would be a mistake; her people have been waiting 66 years to be free, and their patience is running out. The President interprets this as a threat, and leaves the room.
Meanwhile, at the hospital in Arizona, Sean witnesses two uniformed police officers and agents arrive outside. He manages to slip back into regular clothing and asks the nurse who phoned the police why there are cops everywhere. Thinking that he is a murderer, she asks him not to hurt her, and explains what has happened. Sean attempts to flee, and the police chase him through the hospital.
Five years ago, Sean meets Leila for the first time in the MIT swimming pool. Leila is having trouble floating in the pool, because she's in a negative position. Sean gives her some help to improve her form, and the two agree to meet up for a swimming lesson the following day at 5pm.
Back at the hospital, the two agents catch up to Sean at the lobby, and place him under arrest for the murder of Greg Kervin. Greg's death comes as news to Sean.
Back at the hangar, Director Sterling fills Agent Simon Lee in on recent events, and appoints him as leader of a special operations unit to track down any detainees that are hiding in plain sight amongst us, as he has been assigned to Inostranka for "years". The Director notes he is unsure how far they have been infiltrated.
Ten years prior, in Langley, Virginia, Simon is having his blood taken, looking the same now as he did then. He tells the nurse he applied for "Clandestine Services", and she responds that everyone wants to be a spy and notes that the medical tests are really just a formality. She has trouble getting blood from his small veins, something he says he got from his mother. After she finally draws the blood from him and welcomes him to the CIA, Simon goes to the restroom and retrieves a thin plastic tube filled with blood from his arm.
In the present, Agent Lee exits an elevator at the fifteenth floor, and hugs his brother, Thomas. He tells Thomas that now that they know there are others out there, the prisoner release is off the table and the President's people are intent on hunting down everyone connected to the incident. Thomas says they should have let the fighter jets shoot the plane down, but Simon notes that he and Sophia thought that killing nearly 200 passengers would have been unacceptable. Simon also asks about the plane, and Thomas says they decided to use the passengers since they had them. Before leaving, Thomas tells Simon the plane is in Arizona and gives Agent Lee a paper with the coordinates, claiming that he will understand when he finds them.
Meanwhile, Sean rides through Arizona in a car with two FBI agents, and tries to get them to listen to his explanation of what happened to him. However, the agents think he is deluded and don't believe him. Then, they reach a road block near where Sean recalls the plane crashing. The highway officer blocking the road tells the agents that a semi-trailer crashed and spilled chemicals all over the road, so he cannot let anyone pass until the next morning at the earliest. The officer says they are detouring everyone to road 18, which the driver notes will cost them another two hours. Sean asks the agents to go through the roadblock, but they refuse, and say they are taking road 18.
Over the ridge from the roadblock, four military vehicles arrive to the crash site containing Agent Lee, another agent, and several soldiers. Agent Lee finds Michael motionless on the ground and checks for a pulse. Then, the other agent calls Simon to the crest of the hill to see something. Simon proceeds and sees that, like Michael, most of the other passengers are laying motionless on the ground in the desert valley before them. The other agent says that whatever happened to them happened after they left the plane. He adds that they checked the vitals on all the people on the ground, and they are all dead.
